At the heart of every great movement is a story—one born from struggle, resilience, and an unwavering desire to make a difference. For Abdul Zorhad, founder of One Nation Our People (ONOP) Youth Foundation, that story began with financial hardships and a burning desire to ensure others didn’t have to face the same.
Growing up in the Western Division of Fiji, Zorhad witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by his late grandmother, Sabrin Kahloon. Her unwavering spirit, selfless generosity, and quiet determination to help others despite her own struggles deeply shaped his understanding of compassion and community. Inspired by her legacy, Zorhad knew he wanted to dedicate his life to uplifting others.
And so, One Nation Our People (ONOP) was born.
More Than Relief—A Vision for Long-Term Change
Unlike traditional aid organizations that offer only temporary relief, ONOP is different. While emergency food distributions and basic support are part of the mission, ONOP’s core focus lies in sustainable empowerment.
“We don’t just stop at giving groceries,” Zorhad explains. “We also help people set up small businesses, return to education, and find stable employment. Our goal is to break the cycle of poverty.”
ONOP’s projects range from helping youths rejoin schools to training people with disabilities, single parents, and the unemployed for meaningful work. By combining education, mental health support, and job opportunities, ONOP is offering hope where it’s needed most.
A Youth Movement with Heart
What started as a small idea quickly grew into a vibrant youth-led movement. Zorhad and his co-founders, many of whom are university graduates, began mobilizing their peers from sporting leagues and neighborhood communities.
“The power of kindness is like a ripple,” says Zorhad. “Once people saw what we were doing, they wanted to be part of it.”
Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, when resources were limited, Zorhad used his own earnings to help families in need. He recalls the emotional toll of giving up job opportunities and facing burnout, but his mission remained clear: uplift others first.
A Message of Hope for Fiji’s Youth
Now a passionate advocate for youth empowerment and national development, Zorhad wants to inspire the next generation of Fijians to lead with purpose.
“Professionally, my goal is to take my NGO to greater heights,” he says. “But more importantly, I want young people to recognize that their voice matters.”
“Remember, it’s OK to face setbacks. They don’t define your journey. Let your struggles teach you strength. Let your purpose drive your passion. Start wherever you are, use whatever you have, and know that even small acts of kindness can change the world.”
